When you’re replacing a heating or cooling system or building a new home, the HVAC system installation makes a significant difference in the performance of the new equipment. The State of California recognizes this, and under the provisions of Title 24, requires specific steps and testing to assure that your installation meets a specific set of guidelines that include:
Contractor Selection
All HVAC contractors in California must be licensed, bonded and insured. In addition, choosing a NATE- (North American Technician Excellence) certified contractor will assure you of a sound HVAC installation. This certification is only available to technicians who demonstrate the highest performance and knowledge in the industry.
Proper Sizing
The industry standard for sizing HVAC equipment is software called Manual J. It takes into account all the factors that contribute to the heating and cooling load of your home, including cubic footage, overall energy efficiency, floorplan design and family characteristics. Failing to install the right size will drive up energy consumption, reduce comfort and hasten system wear. Once the contractor determines its size, he or she will move onto the best ductwork configuration and sizing using Manual D software.
Minimum Efficiency Ratings
The federal minimum standards apply to both new home and replacement systems for HVAC system installation. Installing a more efficient system results in lower energy bills that help offset the cost of upgrading the system.
Outdoor Condenser Placement
The condenser needs to be placed at least five feet from a dryer vent under Title 24’s provisions, and it needs to have adequate air circulation on all sides. It should be placed in as shady a place as possible to hasten the cooling process.
Ductwork Inspection and Sealing
The contractor must inspect the ductwork for leaks and fix any loose sections and air leaks.
Precise Refrigerant Charge
When the installation is finished, the contractor has to verify that the amount of refrigerant in the system is precisely what the manufacturer requires.
